A Few Of My Favorite Things, aka I'm imparting the assenine wisdom of being a mom for a whopping 3 weeks.

So, here it is. A run-down of the things I love, the things I hate, etc. for being three weeks into the game. I always find it so interesting how every mom's list is different -- bottle sterilizers, for instance, are always 50/50. Some swear by Swaddlemes, but cannot figure out a Moby. But off the top of my head, these are my must-haves & my leave-alones. & remember that opinions & favorites lists are like assholes -- everyone has one & they all stink. Grain of salt, but maybe it will help someone who is about to pick up their registry gun & face ye olde Wall of Nipples.

Flannel receiving blankets a la Carter's (get ready for my love affair regarding all things Carters). Perfect for swaddling, light & compact enough to carry in the diaper bag, & great as an emergency burp cloth. My one word of caution -- wash on a delicate setting in cold water, then dry on a delicate setting to keep them smooth & soft.

There are no words to express my love for the Fisher Price My Little Lamb swing. NO WORDS. Every morning, Harrison happily swings for a good 30 or 45 minutes while I have a cup of coffee, check my email, & clean up a little from the night before. Also a plus when he's fussy -- just plop him in with a paci, get the swing going, & within minutes, he's quietly glaring at the little lamb mobile.

Fat, fluffy blankets if you have a fall/winter baby. I usually use them for stroller walks or tossing it over the car seat when it's a wee bit cooler outside. As I type, Harrison is snoozing in his Boppy with one snuggled over him since we keep it pretty cool in our house. Carter's makes them, but I'm a big fan of the one's from Target made by Circo (the upside of snagging them on sale for $9.99).

Newborn nipples for your bottles. You'll need at least 6, if not 8. Our bottles came with 1 month + nipples, but Harrison was choking on the formula, making a 10pm Target run necessary on our first night home. & to wash those little nips...

Bottle Sterilizer. I know, I know...50% of moms love them, 50% say they are $30 in the trash & unnecessary. Mark me in the former category because I adore mine on an unhealthy (but undoubtedly sanitary) level. We don't run our dishwasher often, so this is the perfect option to washing them in the sink, then popping all bottles, nipples, & pacifiers in the microwave for 2 minutes. Fast. Easy. Steamy. Like me in bed with my husband.

Soothies. No explanation needed. & no, you can never have enough. One for the stroller, the car seat, a few for the diaper bag, one to continuously wrestle from the dog, & one that will inevitably get wedged in the couch cushions with popcorn pieces & rusting pennies. In our house, we take it one step further with the Wubbanub, which helps keep the paci in his mouth & simultaneously gives him something fluffy to grasp. WIN.

Carter's fleece footed pajamas. LOVE. My girlfriend, Susan, brought a pair by the hospital & I immediately fell in love. She had the smarts & thoughtfulness to realize that a) Harrison was smaller than anticipated & b) the temperature dropped over 30 degrees from when we entered the hospital, so we were probably lacking anything warm in the newborn-size. The Momma & I promptly ran out & bought 3 more pairs within 24 hours of being home. They are so snuggly, soft, don't shrink, & easy to get on & off -- perfect for both fast stripping after spit-up or the bleary-eyed 3am diaper changes. & they're so damn cute with the puppy ears on the feet.

The Moby. If you read my blog, you know that this needs no other explanation. Best $40 ever spent. Exhibit A. Exhibit B.

and finally, for those that use formula, Munchkin Formula Dispensers. Get at least 3, if not 4. Yes, they're convenient for the diaper bag, but what I love most is how easy they make night feedings. Every night before bed, I fill up 3 bottles with water -- two 2oz and one 4oz bottle, & fill the dispenser accordingly with powdered formula. That way everything is in his nursery for the night to just pour & shake for bottles, eliminating any need to trot up & down stairs.

Things I'm not wild about:
1) Swaddlemes. Total waste of money, in my opinion. Harrison hated them, plus they were too thin to keep him warm. Maybe the fleece ones would have been better, but a blanket is just fine. Plus, he had his arms out of it in under 2.5 seconds.

2) Sleep outfits without feet. Don't even bother, for serious. No feet means socks, which Harrison kicks off during his sleep. & then he cries because his feet are cold, not that I blame him -- cold feet at 3am are nothing to joke about.

3) Fancy burp cloths. Just use plain pre-fold cloth diapers. You can snag 12 for roughly $10 as opposed to 3 pretty ones for $10. & we go through them like Sherman went through Atlanta.

4) Baby monitor. Our house is decent-sized at 1650 sq ft & two stories, but we don't use a monitor. Seriously, when the kid is awake, he lets us know & it echoes through the entire house. It also keeps us from freaking out over every single peep he makes in his sleep, which keeps me asleep & Nate sane. The only time I can see us using ours is next summer, when we're out on our screen porch at night past his bedtime.

Okay, I have never commented before, but LOVE your blog! You tell it like it is and make me laugh while you are doing it. I have a little boy (Wyatt)who is 8 weeks old and am going through all of this with you :)! And I totally agree with the Little Lamb swing. He is peacefully rocking in it right now! My daughter, who is 3, never liked the swing and I am now convinced it's because we didn't have this one. Wyatt is not using the Soothie pacifier anymore, he has moved down to a smaller paci, but I wish we knew about the Wubbanub. He probably would still be using it. One thing I love that you didn't mention here, but should try if you haven't yet are the Carter's Sleep Sacks. THey are really cute and fleecy and keep his feet warm because they are closed up at the bottom. Plus it makes changing even easier because you just unzip!! Just my 2 cents...
Anyway, your little boy is gorgeous and I look forward to reading more about your life with Harrison :) ~Shaye

Great list! You may change your mind about the monitor. Our little man got quieter as he got older. He's literally right next door and I still sometimes don't wake up when he's up. I'm a light sleeper too. At birth I never had that problem!

OMG I completely agree with pretty much everything on your must-have list! Carter's is definitely a god given gift for mommys! I have two of the Target fluffy blankets and I love them so much, I wish they made them big enough for adults! Thanks for posting this great overview of these must-have products.

I too got swaddlemes for my little one and my first time at home was so excited to use it. Well wouldn't you know the little stinker found a way to get her arms through the bottom and had the whole top portion mashed up around her face. I was instantly turned off and disappointed in my failed purchase. Fast forward a few weeks and she was no longer staying in a receiving blanket swaddle but still startling herself awake. I revisited the swaddleme and it was a HUGE success. Give it another try later on down the road, you may get some use out of them. Oh and the fleece ones I find make my daughter too warm, but you did say you run your house cooler so they may work great for you!

I love that he glares at the lamb mobile. One of our glares at the bears over his swing. My husband and i have running jokes about why he is so pissed off at those bears, they look innocent enough to us.

Oh, but the baby monitor gets fun. Like when my sister figured out what it was and started using it walkie-talkie style.

You don't want to miss that.

I agree with almost everything you said. Except, I have to have our monitor on. We are in a teeny tiny duplex and can hear him cry without it, but I worry about him choking.

Oh, if you love the carters footed pjs... Have you seem the zipper sleepers? I think they are Gerber brand. We LOVED them. They are thin and soft and have feet. They are sooooo easy for diaper changes.

Thanks for the advice...I'll definitely take it to heart! I definitely want a sterilizer, and I'm so excited that the one I registered for has been purchased! :)

My little Emma is 16 months old and I still have an extreme love for Carters. They have the best clothes....especially the fleece footed sleepers.
When we go for baby #2, we will be getting a new swing......ours is just meh (the rainforest one)and Em definitely liked the pappasan (sp) style at daycare over ours.
I agree with the monitor. Although, it would be helpful for when DH and I hang out in the basement family room and she is asleep upstairs.

You obviously don't have a baby that needs to be swaddled then. My son broke out of regular blankets in "2.5 seconds" but was sleeping through the night at 2 weeks with the SwaddleMe's. If it weren't for the SwaddleMe's then nights would have been hell with him waking up every 20-30 minutes (like he did before we tried them out). It was the best baby investment we ever made.

We registered for that same sterilizer, I was iffy on it, but it doesn't have any cords, and I love that. Good to know it was a good registry add on!

I have a 4 week old little boy who hated the swaddleme wraps at first since he likes his hands up by his head....great for him, but not for us when he startles and wakes himself up! We just tried the wraps again this week after being unsuccessful in the beginning and he's doing much better with them...we aren't sleeping much longer because he's going through a growth spurt but hopefully we will be soon! We also love the carters flannel receiving blankets and fleece sleepers (especially since we live in MI). My husband likes the gerber zip up sleep and plays that another person posted about...I like them, but think it's easier to undo the snaps down by his butt in the carters sleepers than unzip a whole sleeper when you're tryin to change him in the middle of the night! Good to know about the sterilizer...we may have to invest in one since we don't run the dishwasher every day and washing the bottles in the sink gets old :)

I read this whole post (I don't even have a baby) and all I can focus on is the tiny little bathrobe hanging on the hook in the background of your picture. Aaaadorable.

Awesome! Glad you're loving the Moby! :)

I also think you may change your mind on the monitor (but maybe not, who knows). There have been times we've forgotten to turn it on, and I'll wake up to hear Nate crying & wonder how long it's been going on & I feel terrible! And he's just 1 room over. The monitor definitely helps wake us up. I think after you get past the newborn stage, your hormones settle down some and you don't startle awake every time the baby burps anymore, which is why monitors then become useful. :)

Here are my faves: the Medela sterilizer bags (we EBF, so he only gets a bottle every day or two), the cloth diaper burp cloths, and Aden + Anais swaddles. LOVE all of those.

We had tried those Swaddleme's too with no success. We ended up trying the Miracle Blanket - best $30 we spent. It was great until he started somehow houdini-ing out of it. About that time, he basically didn't need to be swaddled any more though.

I LOVE the Moby so much I want to marry it. 'Nuf said.

We would have died without the swing.

Totally agree about SwaddleMe's - I am a huge fan of the old skool swaddle with a huge blanket (Swaddle Designs or Adee and Wil). The miracle blanket is pretty awesome too as it's the only thing she still can't bust out of.

Agree about the burp cloths. We have some fancy schmancy ones that I used once and found them to be practically hydrophobic. Gerber makes some "light duty" cloth diapers that turn out to be completely perfect as burp cloths.

I have to disagree about the swaddlemes, but just because I can't swaddle worth a damn with a regular blanket. (And I've found that LO loves sleeping with her arms poked out of the bottom of her swaddleme's...but it still keeps them by her side so that she doesn't wake herself up with her startles.)

I just found your blog and I'm in sweet baby love with it :) You are an awesome writer and I love your honesty. It's about time someone tells it like it is. Love it.
I love your list and I agree with everything on it. Good picks!

The monitor becomes useful when you are doing sleep training. It helps you know whether they've finally gone to sleep without having to chance them seeing you when you peek in on them.

My .02 about the monitor - when my niece was 4 months old she was asleep in her crib and my brother was working in the next room. She spit up in her sleep and was choking on it, couldn't cry or make noise while choking but my brother heard weird gurgling noises on the monitor and checked on her. Saved her life, if they had no monitor they never would have heard her.

And I am glad you like the pj's. I now work part time at Carter's and use my sweet discount for the soft fleece zip up pj's :)

Love your blog! We registered for the lamb swing and also the lamb bouncer. Do you have any experience with the bouncer or do you think the swing alone does the trick? Glad to hear your little one loves it!

Kat said...

My tip I learned from my sister: You can use the receiving blankets rolled up to put on both side when little one is in the bouncer, swing, etc. Keep him up right and not leaning over!
